"If you walked in your kitchen and found your toddler playing under the sink, where you keep all your cleaning supplies and bug sprays and household products - would your heart stop for an instant?
if your toddler accidentally got your cleaning products on their hands or drank some dish soap or all purpose cleaner - would you flip and call poison control with your heart in your throat?
A few years ago, this cabinet would have locks on it.
Now, I don’t panic. I tell her to move along and play with something else. But I don’t freak. Because these are safe. Because I’ve made the switch because once I knew better, I could do better.
There are over 1,300 substances completely banned from use in products in Europe. A more recent set of regulations called REACH puts further regulations on more than 500 of those toxic ingredients.
By comparison, the FDA has banned 11. 😳😳😳 Nope. I didn’t miss a zero there. The US banned only 11 of the thousands of toxic ingredients that have been scientifically proven to be harmful to your health. This means it’s up to you to pay attention to what you buy and what you don’t.
Lysol, Tide (yes even Tide Free and Clear), Bleach, Clorox, Colgate, Dreft, Dryer Sheets, Aveeno, Johnson & Johnson, Pledge, Windex, Dawn, Cascade, Meyers (yes this stuff is super toxic), Purell, and those are just a few common everyday products that are slowly harming every system in the body. ^^^^^ I used to use ALL of those and more. I wish I knew then what I know now. But I’m so glad someone told me so I could make the changes. Better late than never.
Unless you’re planning on moving to Europe soon, here’s what I do to make sure I’m not letting toxic ingredients into my home."

Week Two: Household Cleaners
How to Read Product Labels
Common Dirty Ingredients
Phthalates we discussed as an ingredient in your beauty products, but that is not the only way you risk exposure. They are also found on the ingredient list of many household cleaners. As you will see above, phthalates are endocrine disrupting in the body, this means that the chemicals interfere with hormones.
PERC is another common toxin in your household cleaners. PERC is a neurotoxin and possible carcinogen. Products containing this is known to do damage to the nervous system, meaning your brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
These are scary ingredients to find in products you use in attempts to make your home a more clean and welcoming environment for visitors and family! The list goes on and on, check out the graphic above for more toxic ingredients and examples of where they can be found. We invite you to ditch these products and join us in switching to cleaners we do not have to fear!
Read labels! Make sure you’re reading the labels before you buy anything that gets applied to your hands, face, lips or hair.
If it has something you don’t want in it, put it back down.
Are you ready to ditch and switch?!
