I owe you an apology.

For years I’ve been so heavy hearted in my storytelling, so serious, so passionate with my words that humor feels foreign to you. That’s on me. Ooops… I’m sorry.

Humor and laughter are such an integral part of my life and my joy formula, and I’ve been so ridiculously serious that I’ve somehow managed to convince you that there is no space for it amongst grief.

Grief as a widow.
Grief after a failed adoption.
Grief in adoption… x3.
Grief in losing my side kick Princess.
Grief in letting go of the farm…

Grief and laughter coexist. And yet no one heard me laugh, at least not on the internet.

So here’s the story. Twice I’ve told jokes on the internet- TWO whole times 🫣 and both times it was MISSED! Which is partially the reason I have hidden that side of me- because the internet is WILD and people are so easily offended and equally sensitive. And I truly don’t want or intend to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Yesterday I posted a funny meme about fake eye lashes and gravy. And how if you have fake eye lashes that we can’t possibly be the same- implying we cannot be friends. IT WAS A JOKE- y’all. But the internet is like this giant text thread where no one actually hears you lol 😂

Someone thought I was being mean (or maybe they were being sarcastic 🤔)… but it still begs to make me think, maybe I’ve just been so daggum serious and hardcore about perfection that I haven’t shown my sense of humor- which is dry and slightly sarcastic (that’s actually a stretch hehe 😜).

I think we need to laugh. We need to laugh so hard we pee our pants- even if we aren’t 10 months pregnant lying on our dining room floor, hiding from our husband (I’ll share that story soon).

What’s a world without laughter?! 🤭

So don’t be so serious friends. And I promise I’ll keep them coming if you promise not to be offended.

Ok friends… I need your help…

My cycle is back in full swing and I’ve only ever used the Ovia app. I would love an app that teaches me more about my cycle and tracking my mood/productivity and how my brain operates throughout my cycle!

Also this frugal mama doesn’t want a subscription, so something free is preferred! I may eventually get a human design ring but I’m not there yet.

What do you recommend?

1️⃣ Trader Joe’s Beef and Broccoli (over Basmati rice — SO good and fast!)
2️⃣ Trader Joe’s Orange Chicken (over Basmati rice)
3️⃣ Aldi’s Broccoli Stuffed Chicken (pro tip: serve with rice scampi if you’re feeling fancy — cook your rice in broth, then deglaze the pan with wine, butter, Parmesan, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Life-changing.)
4️⃣ Aldi’s Artichoke Stuffed Chicken (serve over pasta, sundried tomatoes, and alfredo sauce = restaurant vibes at home!)

Also, I just tried the calamari with pineapple chili sauce tonight, from Aldi’s and it was phenomenal for a freezer food! 😋

Who taught you to bang your cookies?!

My stepdad, better known in our house as Papa G, was the first one I ever knew to “bang cookies”. 🍪 Who was it for you?!

I’ve held onto this special 20 year old (to me) famous Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe and I’m finally releasing it! It’s perfect, especially for ice cream sandwiches (hint hint)

SAVE this for later ⬇️ and check out my stories for the link to the blog and cookbook highlight!

Ingredients:
1 cup Unsalted Butter
3/4 cup Sugar
3/4 cup Light Brown Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Baking Soda
2 cups Chocolate Chips

Optional: 1 Cup Coarsely Chopped Pecans

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Cream butter and sugars together until combined. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well.
Sift together flour, salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl and gradually stir into butter/sugar mixture.
Once combined, stir in chocolate chips (and pecans).
Spoon dough onto ungreased cookie sheet (or one lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper) in 1 1/2 tablespoon amounts.
Bake for 10 minutes or until edges are golden brown.
Bang cookies for that perfect 👌

Here’s my beef with “influencer” status:

This place has become infiltrated with ads when it was built for relationship- IMO.

And, this makes me want to hermit because I don’t want to be associated with transactional behavior, but I want to be here to make friends online, because #momlife is all consuming and I need this as much as you do! But I also love sharing finds and tips and recipes as much as any blogger!

So there’s always this internal conflict going on inside of me because I have no desire to ONLY be the person who influences you to click my links or buy this or that. You never have to try my recipes or do one of my DIYs. I won’t be mad if you watch my stories like a fly on the wall and never DM me or answer my question.

What I do want is to give you hope that JOY is yours for the finding. What I do want is to show you how to find it. What I do want is to be your friend and cheer you on as you navigate the messy and the madness in a meaningful life.

So, I won’t do things like influencers do… I won’t post a quote or a scripture to get you to like it or hope it will go viral, I will post it, if I feel the nudge that the Holy Spirit is pressing into my heart to share, in hopes it will bring you joy. I’ll write the words only I can write. I’ll tell the stories only I can tell.

I’ll be faithful with what the Lord has given me, even if it makes you question if you believe me or makes you feel uncomfortable. I’ll obey when God tells me to pray for you and not just simply tell you I am or I will, I’ll pray with you!

I have a deep longing for community and burden in my heart for those who are home, who don’t have people close by or friends in their corner. I want to cheer you on, friend.

In August 2019, Freddie and I took a day trip to Helen, Georgia. We went tubing, ate at Catch 22, visited the shops for his first funnel cake and caramel apples but when it came time to ride the water slide this kid chickened out!

We climbed the steel tower of stairs and halfway through he was having terrifying fears and thoughts (think final destination) flashing through his mind and he refused to go down the slide. So this poor mama had to go down herself, alone!

He came over yesterday with his girlfriend, now almost 21 and rode our Zipline! I was honestly shocked but in the best way! Glad to see he’s conquering his fears, even if he will never do it again 🫣🤣

A friend of mine posted this and I felt so seen and so heard and thought you might too!

“Can we talk about seeing the world through rose-colored glasses?

Because I do.
I see beauty in everything.
I see potential in people.
I see hope in hard places.

And while that might sound lovely - it’s not always easy.

Sometimes I wonder... am I just being naïve?
Am I seeing “truth,” or just what I want to see? Perhaps a bit of both… it’s not so black and white.

What I’m realizing is that seeing the best doesn’t mean ignoring the worst.

It means holding the duality of both.
It means choosing to be a witness to beauty without turning away from truth.
Sometimes what’s true is beautiful, sometimes it’s not.

This is my edge right now. My growth point.
Not changing how I see... but learning how to trust it more deeply. I am working on this, every day.

A year ago I left a job that was bringing in a LOT of money for our family.

I was sick and tired of the toxic environment (even though I had already found ways to work remotely all but once a month). I was tired of my boss blaming my kids for taking up space in my life because I had worked for him before I became their mom. I was tired of feeling like no matter how much I worked, it was never appreciated.

I learned to prioritize my life, my husband, and our growing family. I learned to be present. I learned to make peace an intentional part of my day. I learned to find joy by creating boundaries.

I had to quit.

It hasn’t been easy. We’ve struggled at times. But it was the BEST decision I’ve made since becoming a mom.

I’ve waited my whole life for these moments.

No more stress. No more drama. No more anxiety about team meetings with blame shifting.

My day revolves around my family. Our decisions are made based on our values and the things we want in our life.

I shared this memory today to remind you to always put your dreams and your family before others. You get one life, friend. Live it well. Create a life you love. Even when it is hard, it will be worth it!

It hasn’t been easy. We’ve struggled at times. But it was the BEST decision I’ve made since becoming a mom.

I’ve waited my whole life for these moments.

No more stress. No more drama. No more anxiety about team meetings with blame shifting.

My day revolves around my family. Our decisions are made based on our values and the things we want in our life.

I shared this memory today to remind you to always put your dreams and your family before others. You get one life, friend. Live it well. Create a life you love. Even when it is hard, it will be worth it!

My MIL asked me today “When are you gonna stop picking him up like that?”

And what can I say?! He’s an amazing Dad and we are making up for not finding each other sooner 🤭😅

I have always wanted a big family because I didn’t have that growing up. My sister and I are nearly 5 years apart and it took us 18 years to become friends. I wanted our life to look different- and apparently so did she 😉 because she’s got 3 and might consider more.

We aren’t feeling “done” yet either, so don’t be surprised if there’s another in the oven, Lord willing AFTER Christmas 🙏🏼

We are striving hard at creating a meaningful life for our kids- one of intention and purpose and not just following the norm.

I’ve always been the black sheep of my family and I am sure I always will be, because I wanted to go against the grain. It’s just natural for me. I question EVERYTHING and EVERYONE.

And no, I’m not a skeptic. I just feel so deeply in my heart that life isn’t supposed to be a rat race, filled with busy schedules and lists of things that keep us out of touch and spent.

I truly believe there is a better way. We’ve worked hard as a family to create a new path, one that serves our family, giving us more time together.

This year Adam changed jobs for second shift hours to give us more daylight as a family for throwing the football and putting up fences for chickens. We also opted to homeschool because we wanted to spend our time implementing values and skills in our children that were more important than the societal agenda. And we put down roots after being in our home for nearly 3 years- by starting our homestead with chickens!

These are small changes but these ripples can and will make room for a life we love.

I know these ideas aren’t for everyone but I want to encourage you to follow your heart and chase a life you long to create, filled with joy!

Remember: You will never see a harvest, if you don’t sow the seed.

We tried listing our house for sale last summer but soon realized it was awful timing. The market had next to nothing, prices have been far too high and our home far surpasses what we found in our budget.

Our heart longs for land, for a place to farm, for space to roam and our kids to have fields to raise animals and play.

We decided to take it off the market and wait til spring. But, we found the same issue when we were looking for something that suits our needs as a bigger family but also a forever place to grow and expand our dream. We assumed the market would be better, but we still found nothing.

We prayed and God sent us a sign- I’ll tell that story soon but it was clear we were staying for the foreseeable future. So, we decided to finally start making our house we’ve been living in for 3 years our home! (And, YES… I realize how silly and ridiculous that sounds.)

We put up a Zipline for our kids and then Adam wanted a bigger one for us! We’ve already been on it for hours!

We put up fencing and built a chicken coop to get our homestead started.

I painted and wallpapered our laundry room!

We got a puppy! Haha

And then we started using our basement and backyard for a space for homeschool and a gym for me!

I’m so grateful for this home, but I’ve let my attitude about it slip away into what I want next. For now, I’m trying hard to love this space that’s our little oasis on the creek!

Kid art I actually want to hang in my house! 😍

Call me cruel, but I’m a little annoying when it comes to my home being coordinated. You can take the interior designer out of the field but you can’t take the interior designer out of me!

I saw something similar to this on a reel a few weeks back and then decided to grab our paint colors and have my kids (ages 3 and 6) help me create some wall art!

I absolutely love their unique style and the meaning behind them. It was fun and crazy and now our empty hallway has new life… no pun intended ✝️☺️

There is NO shortage of drawings and crafts in the Alonso home but we hope this can inspire you to make art you love with your littles or grands and put it up on the walls for years to come!

We don’t actually “do” any of the imaginary people anymore- so the tooth fairy 🧚 never came to be in our home because she was out with Santa, the Easter Bunny and all the others, but it did have me wondering how much she’s paying out these days!

Take out all the paint cans in your house that you love- cabinet colors, wall colors, accent colors… you name it! Then, let your kids make art with them!

It’s Easter but we also wanted something we would enjoy all year round, so I taped a cross with painters tape and used the negative space to highlight this sweet reminder of Jesus’ love for us!

This is the perfect craft, holiday, or homeschool project and makes the former interior designer in me happy!
