Elderberry Syrup infused with Essential oils! Say whaaaat??
Below, I'll share my friend Meagan's recipe, but first, let's talk about the amazing benefits of elderberries.
"Elderberries are rich in vitamins A, B and C and are a traditional cold and flu remedy used for hundreds of years. They are known to have high antioxidant activity and the bioflavonoids and other proteins in the juice of the berry destroy the ability of a cold or flu virus to infect a cell. Add that to all the amazing properties and benefits of essential oils and you have a yummy and amazing recipe on your hands!" - The Droppery
Elderberry Syrup Infused with EOs
Ingredients
1 cup dried elderberries
3 cups water
1 cup raw local honey
3 drops nutmeg vitality oil
2 drops clove vitality oil
2 drops cinnamon vitality oil
3 drops ginger vitality oil
7 drops thieves vitality oil
Instructions
instant pot
Put water and elderberries in instapot, and set manually for 9 minutes on high pressure.
Vent pressure. You want liquid to have reduced by about half, if it has not, leave on simmer for a little bit to let it reduce further. This could take a little while.
Strain/mash berries into a bowl, reserving the liquid. Discard the berries and let the liquid cool.
When cooled to room temperature, stir in the honey and oils. Pour into bottles.
stove top
Put water and elderberries in saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook for 45-60 minutes.
You want liquid to have reduced by about half, if it has not, leave on simmer for a little bit to let it reduce further. Remove from heat and let cool enough to be handled.
Gently mash berries with the back of a spoon. Pour through a strainer into a glass bowl. Discard the berries and let the liquid cool.
When cooled to room temperature, stir in the honey and oils. Pour into bottles.
Store in the fridge and take daily for its immune boosting properties! Some sources recommend taking only during the week and not on the weekends to boost immunity.
Standard does is 1/2-1 tsp for kids and 1/2-1 tsp for adults. If the flu does strike, take the normal does every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear.
How to Use:
Use to sweeten hot cereal
Pour on top of french toast, pancakes, or waffles
Stir a spoonful into your tea
Add a little to your NingXia Red shot
Take a spoonful straight
Tips:
Buy elderberries EARLY in the season before they sell out or the price goes up!! Choose organic if possible, and dried.
You can purchase these bottles at DOLLAR TREE for $1!!! Meagan had a friend make the adorable labels on a Cricut.
